Dear Emily:

I am sorry to have read in your petition letter the circumstances you outlined, and I have carefully considered your request for credit standing in PSYC 100 (FW 2022/23). After careful consideration of your file, I have decided to grant your petition.

Your grade in PSYC 100 will appear on your transcript as CR.

Emily, I am concerned that you are repeating PSYC 100 for the 3rd time and wonder if you are hoping to change to that Major? If so, I encourage you to take courses from a back-up Plan in case you do not get accepted into the PSYC Plan since it is an extremely competitive program.

I am also concerned about your heavy course load this year. You are exceeding our recommended 5 course per term guideline, and I strongly suggest that you consider reducing that course load by pausing and evaluating the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term. The week 8 drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's.

Emily, I do need to warn you that the petition process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition and I encourage you to continue to work with your support team to help you manage your health and academics.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Best of luck this year.
Sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
