I was sorry to read of the difficulties you outlined in your petition letter, and I have carefully considered your request to waive the 21-day petition deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant that request.
Based on your circumstances and documentation, I will drop LLCU 213, POLS 382, POLS 384, POLS 388, RELS 314 (F 2022); CLST 207, INDG 301, POLS 285, POLS 392 (W 2023); and IDIS 199, IDIS 373 (S 2023) late due to the circumstances outlined. The grades in these courses will be changed to DR notations on your transcript which will subsequently increase your GPA so you will no longer be Required to Withdraw. You may resume your studies in January 2024 (Winter term) and can register in courses now for that term.
I have granted this petition based on the challenges you outlined as well as your documentation, but let me remind you that going forward, you should pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term and drop courses that you are behind in, or not achieving the grades you desire, by the week 8 drop date deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Kanisha, I strongly encourage you continue to work with your support persons and to proactively manage the impact of your condition on your academics. If you have not yet registered with QSAS, I encourage you to discuss this option with your counsellor since a QSAS Advisor can put in place appropriate accommodations to help you manage the impact of your challenges on your academics.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
