I was sorry to read of the challenges you explained in your petition letter, and I have carefully considered your request to drop STAT 268, MATH 225, ECON 255, ECON 222 (F 2022); HIST 299, HIST 245, ECON 391, ECON 351, ECON 310 (W 2023); and ECON 223, HIST 260 (S 2023). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your petition to drop STAT 268, MATH 225, ECON 255, ECON 222 (F 2022); HIST 299, HIST 245, ECON 391, ECON 351, ECON 310 (W 2023). I recognize that the circumstances you outlined inhibited your academic success during the timeframe of these courses and that the documentation you submitted supports this timeframe.
The dropping of these courses will remove the Requirement to Withdraw since your GPA will be positively impacted by these late drops. You will be permitted to register in Winter term 2024 courses.
2. To deny your request to drop ECON 223, HIST 260 (S 2023). As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under "extenuating circumstances." The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance which occurred after the drop date deadline. I recognize that the situation was still very difficult at this time, but at this point you had clear signals that you needed to take action to drop courses as need (and/or not enroll in more courses during the summer term). You received your Requirement to Withdraw letter in May advising you that you could drop your summer term courses or complete them. There were no new extenuating circumstances provided that would have prevented you from dropping those summer term courses.
I have granted this petition based on the challenges you outlined as well as your documentation, but let me remind you that going forward, you should pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term and drop courses that you are behind in, or not achieving the grades you desire, by the week 8 drop date deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Daniel, I strongly encourage you continue to work with your support persons and to proactively manage the impact of your condition on your academics. If you have not yet registered with QSAS, I encourage you to discuss this option with your health care provider since a QSAS Advisor can put in place appropriate accommodations to help you manage the impact of your challenges on your academics.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
Daniel, let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the lower grade is excluded from their GPA and the higher grade is included.
