Dear Elizabeth:
I am sorry to have read of the sad losses you reported in your petition letter and I have carefully considered your request to receive Aegrotat Standing in FILM 206, FILM 218, FILM 342 (W 2023) and drop RELS 137 (W 2023) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
• To grant your request to drop RELS 137 based on the circumstances outlined as well as your documentation.
• To deny your request for Aegrotat standing in FILM 206, FILM 218, and FILM 342. Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, "Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60% of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)”.
o In FILM 206, you have not submitted the Scholarly Annotations (20%), Thesis Statement (5%), Paper Outline (5%), Editing Workshop (5%), and Final Paper (25%) which make it difficult to determine whether the learning outcomes have been fully achieved.
o In FILM 218, you have not submitted the Tutorial Assignment #3 (6.67% of final grade) and Final Project (40% of final grade) which again, makes it difficult to determine whether the learning outcomes have been fully achieved.
o In FILM 342, you have submitted 50% of the course work so are shy of meeting the requirement for Aegrotat standing once again.
Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student’s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. Additionally, circumstances and documentation should be provided as to why the student is unable to complete the course during the following term of which the course was originally offered.
Elizabeth, I am pleased however to advise you that the instructors in FILM 206, FILM 218, and FILM 342 are willing to accept the outstanding course requirements until April 30th, 2024. I encourage you to contact Professor Vena and Professor Lang to make arrangements regarding due dates for the outstanding course deliverables.
Going forward, I encourage you to continue to work with your support networks and to
carefully evaluate your progress in courses by week 7 of the term. If you find the material too difficult or have not kept up with the course work, you should drop the course by the week 8 drop deadline. The drop deadline is set at Week 8 to allow students plenty of time to assess their progress in a class and withdraw without any academic penalty if they feel that they cannot keep up with the demands or have the academic background needed to successfully complete it.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances.
