Dear Elizabeth:
I was sorry to read of the circumstances you outlined in your petition letter, and I have carefully considered your request to receive Credit standing in POLS 110 (FW 2022/23) and PHIL 151 (W 2023) as well as Drop ANAT 100 (W 2023) after the drop deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1. To grant your request to Drop ANAT 100 (W 2023) based on your extenuating circumstances.
2. To grant your request for Credit standing in POLS 110 (FW 2022/23) based on your extenuating circumstances
3. To deny your request to receive Credit standing in PHIL 151 (W 2023). As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, "Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, achieved a passing grade in the course, and met the learning outcomes, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.” The information I have received from your instructor notes that you did not submit any of the 5 required posts (discussions = 20% of mark) so you did not complete all the course requirements and therefore do not qualify for credit standing in that course.
I am however willing to grant you Aegrotat standing in that course which means your final grade will be adjusted and based only on the work you have submitted. Your prorated grade in that course will be B- which will replace the current grade of D-.
Going forward, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in courses by week 7 of the term and if you are finding the material too difficult or have not kept up with the course work, you should drop the course by the week 8 drop deadline. The drop deadline is set at Week 8 to allow students plenty of time to assess their progress in a class and withdraw without any academic penalty if they feel that they cannot keep up with the demands or have the academic background needed to successfully complete it.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Elizabeth, I strongly encourage you to continue to work with your health care team and if your circumstances become chronic, I suggest you speak with your health care provider about the possibility of registering with QSAS, if you have not done so already since a QSAS Advisor may be able to put in place accommodations to help you manage both your health and your academics.
