Dear Madison:

I am sorry to have read in your petition letter of the injury you have outlined, and I have carefully considered your request to drop BIOL 401 and GNDS 335 (F 2023) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.

I have granted this petition based on your circumstances, and the documentation provided and wish you well in your ongoing recovery.

Going forward, a good practice for all students is to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses during week 7 of the term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Madison, I encourage you to continue to work with your health care provider and to consider registering with QSAS if you have not done so already. A QSAS Advisor may be able to put into place accommodations which will help you manage both your injury and academics.

Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
