I have carefully considered your request to waive the 1-Year Petition Deadline related to the 2021 Winter term. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 3.7.2. states that, "Exceptions to the petition and appeal deadlines can only be granted in cases where extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control render the student unable to submit a petition or appeal within the specified timeline. The student must be able to show that the extenuating circumstances were ongoing. The student must also be able to demonstrate that these circumstances prevented the student from acting between the time the original decision was received and the time at which the appeal was eventually initiated. An appeal of this type should include a presentation of the specific reasons for the delay and must include documents that support the reasons for this delay.”
While I acknowledge the issues that you reported with an online proctored exam during the 2021 Winter term, your petition didn’t demonstrate why you didn’t make this request within the 1-year deadline. I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision however, as I see that you were able to address other academic deadlines as you were able to apply for academic consideration for extenuating circumstances in subsequent terms, I cannot grant this request. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I also want to remind you that information about academic petitions and appeal options are always available to students within the Academic Calendar queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/ and on the Faculty of Arts and Science website queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/student-services/academic-petitions-and-appeals.
If you are concerned with the impact that this course has on your cumulative GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however only the higher attempt will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
