I have carefully considered your request to waive the 1-Year Petition Deadline related to the 2022 Winter term. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 3.7.2. states that, "Exceptions to the petition and appeal deadlines can only be granted in cases where extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control render the student unable to submit a petition or appeal within the specified timeline. The student must be able to show that the extenuating circumstances were ongoing. The student must also be able to demonstrate that these circumstances prevented the student from acting between the time the original decision was received and the time at which the appeal was eventually initiated. An appeal of this type should include a presentation of the specific reasons for the delay and must include documents that support the reasons for this delay.”
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, your transcript, and the documentation that you supplied including the additional letter that you wrote.
Bronwynn, I want you to know that I am deeply sorry about the loss of your grandmother and that I completely acknowledge the grief that you have been experiencing since December of 2021.
I have denied this request as it did not demonstrate why you were not able to submit this petition within 1 year after the Winter 2022 term ended. Looking at your transcript, I can see that you were able to complete some courses to high standards during the subsequent 2022 Fall term. I also see that you were able to successfully participate in an international exchange at Cardiff University during the 2023 Winter term. As your petition didn’t suggest an incapacity to submit a petition within the 2022 Fall and 2023 Winter terms, I cannot grant your request.
If you are concerned with the impact that your courses from the 2022 Winter term has on your cumulative GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating them in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however only the higher attempt will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
