On Tuesday December 5, 2023, the Board of Studies (Board) reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson’s decision to deny your request to receive credit standing in DEVS 220 (Summer 2023). Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Devon Lin (Faculty member), Christopher Moyes (Faculty member), and Preston Harrison (Student representative). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting. Pamela Briand and Libby Hearn (Arts and Science resource staffs) were also present.
After you left the meeting, the Board carefully considered the information from your oral statement along with the written submissions contained in the file, including the memos from your instructor and your medical documentation. At this meeting and after careful thought and deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean’s decision to deny your appeal to receive Credit Standing in DEVS 220, finding it reasonable considering the Faculty’s regulations.
The Board recognizes the extenuating circumstances you have experienced in the summer of 2023 that impacted your academic performance in DEVS 220. We also appreciate the pressure you felt regarding the completion of this course at this point of your academic career, which accounted for your decision not to drop it by the academic deadline. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that the accommodations you received from the instructor were adequate, and we concur with your instructor that, due to the peer feedback component, some of the assignments could not have been adapted. As we indicated during the meeting, we want to reiterate that this last point by itself makes this course ineligible for Credit Standing as you did not complete all the work in this course, which is a condition for the Credit Standing Notation, as stated in Academic Regulation 10.3.2.
In April 2021, the Queen’s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, this is the last step in the appeal process for this matter, since your ability to progress to the next level is not affected by this decision.
