I have carefully considered your petition for Credit Standing in HLTH 230, BIOL 243 (F22), BIOL 206, BIOL 200, BCHM 218 (W23), and PHGY 215 (S23). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request for Credit Standing in BIOL 206, BIOL 200, and BCHM 218 (W23) as the documentation that you supplied dated November 13, 2023, confirms the severity and academic impacts of your extenuating circumstances between February of 2023 until the end of that Winter term. Your grades in these courses will be replaced with a CR notation on your transcript.
To deny your request for Credit Standing in HLTH 230, BIOL 243 (F22), and PHGY 215 (S23). I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your Petition Letter and the three pieces of documentation that you supplied dated September 29, 2022, June 11, 2023, and November 13, 2023.
The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I have denied your 2022 Fall term Credit Standing requests as I see that you were accommodated appropriately in these classes through Academic Consideration for the two weeks that were suggested by the documentation that you supplied dated September 29, 2022. I also want to remind you that you were allowed a deferred final exam in HLTH 230 into January of 2023 by your instructor.
I have denied your 2023 Summer term request for Credit Standing. I want you to know that I acknowledge the documentation that you supplied dated June 11, 2023 that
confirms a medical procedure on June 12 and a follow-up appointment on June 15 however, the information that I received from the instructor of PHGY 218 (S23) was that you were accommodated appropriately during this timeline with a deferred mid-term. In addition, the documentation that you supplied does not speak to the timeline of your other lower grades in this course.
If you are concerned with the impact that these courses have on your cumulative GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating them in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however only the higher attempt will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
