Dear Apisha:

I have carefully considered your petition to drop FREN 230, HIST 228, and HIST 283 past the academic deadline and for Credit Standing in FREN 241 (F22). After reviewing your file and the information that I received from your instructor of FREN 241, I have decided to grant your petition.

I have granted this request due to the academic impacts of your extenuating circumstances during the Fall term as confirmed by the documentation that you supplied.

As the documentation that you supplied also indicated academic impacts during the 2023 Fall term, I am also willing to allow you to drop DEVS 101, FREN 343, FREN 351, and HIST 275 (F23) after the academic deadline. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 10 business days of receiving this letter.

Apisha, I need to warn you that the petition process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition. Academic impacts from ongoing circumstances should be managed proactively by utilizing options such as academic consideration or accommodations through QSAS. It is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
