Dear Magdalena Ganame:
I have carefully considered your petition request to add ECON 243 and EMPR 230 (W24) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied, your transcript, and the input that you received from the instructors of these courses.
I recognize that you obtained support from the instructors of these courses, however your transcript shows that you haven’t successfully completed any of the courses that you have attempted since the 2021 Winter term. Enrolling in courses this late in the term is not in your best academic interest especially since an instructor is not obligated to accommodate a student in missed work due to late enrollment.
I was glad to read from your petition letter and the documentation that you supplied that you are actively seeking support for your ongoing extenuating circumstances, and I am hopeful that you will be able to succeed in your courses going forward. I encourage you to consider enrolling in a summer term course prior to the beginning of that term so that you can have the best opportunity to succeed in it. I would also suggest that you remain connected with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) for ongoing support from a Counsellor who can help manage the impacts of your health on your academics.
Magdalena, I want to let you know that your Academic Standing will be assessed in May of 2024. I see that you have an Incomplete Grade in ECON 348 from the 2023 Fall term which suggests that you are working on completing that course. If your cumulative GPA remains below 1.6 in May, you will be placed on probation. A strategy that you may consider over the next academic year is to repeat failed courses. When a student repeats the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on their transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of their GPA.
