I have carefully considered your petition to drop JAPN 100 (FW22/23) and BIOL 334 (W23) after the academic deadline and for Aegrotat Standing in BIOL 321 (W23). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to drop JAPN 100 (FW22/23) and BIOL 334 (W23) after the academic deadline due to the academic impacts of extenuating circumstances during the 2023 Winter term as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. I will also allow you to drop BIOL 206 (W23) as I acknowledge that this course was also impacted by these circumstances. Your grades in these courses will be replaced by a DR notation on your transcript.
Going forward, I would suggest that you consider registering with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) if you have not done so already, so that you obtain ongoing support from a Counsellor who can help manage the ongoing impacts of your health on your academics.
To deny your request for Aegrotat Standing in BIOL 321 (W23). Academic Petition and Appeal regulation 3.3.1.3. states that Aegrotat standing is reserved for a course in which a student who, because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, is unable to complete all the work of the class. At least 60 per cent of the work to be evaluated in the class must be completed. As part of the petition decision process, the instructor must assert that the student has met all of the course learning outcomes.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied and the information that I received from the instructor of BIOL 321 related to your grades in this course.
I acknowledge that you were not able to complete all of the components in this course due to the ongoing academic impacts of extenuating circumstances during the 2023 Winter term however, a student is not eligible for an Aegrotat Estimated Grade in a course that they did not meet the learning outcomes in. The instructor of BIOL 321 has confirmed that the most direct assessment of a student’s understanding of the course material is evident from the quizzes and onQ readings which I understand that you were able to complete 5/12 quizzes and 6/12 onQ readings. As the instructor has confirmed
that the low marks that you achieved in these components suggests poor comprehension of the course concepts, I cannot grant this request.
I am however willing to allow you to drop BIOL 321 (W23) after the academic deadline as I understand how the academic impacts of extenuating circumstances impacted this course. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 15 business days of receiving this letter.
Going forward, it is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
