I have reviewed your petition to take more than 6.0 units at another institution on a Letter of Permission during the 2024/2025 academic year. As you know, Regulation 14.1 indicates that a student on a degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science may be permitted to take up to 6.0 units of undergraduate classes elsewhere for credit toward a degree offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science via a Letter of Permission. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to take 12.0 units of POLS courses at the University of British Columbia during the FW24/25 academic year. I have granted this part of your request due to the extenuating circumstances that are preventing you from being able to return to in-person classes at Queen’s University as confirmed within the documentation that you provided. I also recognize that your remaining 12.0 units of required POLS courses are not currently offered through Arts and Science Online at Queen’s. Please know that students can take a maximum of 18.0 units per term, including courses taken at other institutions.
Domestic Letter of Permission information can be found at https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/current-students/course-planning-and-options. It is important to note that some institutions are not eligible for a Letter of Permission and not all courses are eligible for transfer credits. It is your responsibility to apply for a Letter of Permission through SOLUS and receive approval before applying to the host institution.
To deny your request to take elective courses at another institution during the 2024/2025 academic year. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 3.3.1.7 at https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/current-students/course-planning-and-options stress that petition requests to take more than 6.0 units at another institution must directly address how this is necessary due to extenuating circumstances or an exceptional academic opportunity. I have denied this part of your request as your petition didn’t demonstrate extenuating circumstance preventing you from being able to take your remaining electives through Arts and Science Online at Queen’s University. I recognize that you will be living away outside of Kingston for the 2024/2025 academic year and I encourage you to consider enrolling in your electives through Arts and Science online while you take 12.0 units of POLS courses through UBC.
Please be advised that Bachelor of Arts General students are allowed a maximum of 24.0 transfer units toward their academic program including a maximum of 12.0 units toward their plan.
