I was sorry to read about the health-related circumstances that you have been experiencing over the past few years and I am glad that these issues are resolved or being managed in a way that you can be successful with your studies at this time.
I have carefully considered your petition request to waive the petition deadline related to the 2022 Winter, 2022 Summer and 2022 Fall terms. I understand that you want to request either Credit Standing or Aegrotat Standing in ECON 310, ECON 239, GEOL 106 (W22) and to drop COMM 211 (S22) and GPHY 330 (F22) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1) To grant your request to waive the petition deadlines related to the W22, S22 and F22 terms. I understand you were not able to submit these requests within 1-year of the terms ending as the documentation that you supplied confirms that you were engaged in medical tests and subsequent treatments until Feb of 2024. I have also decided to consider your specific course requests without requiring you to submit a subsequent petition.
2) I have decided to deny your request for Credit Standing or Aegrotat Standing in ECON 310, ECON 239, GEOL 106 (W22). I acknowledge the extenuating circumstances that you experienced the 2022 Winter term however I want to remind you of your prior petition decision from November of 2022 when I allowed you an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in these courses until December 30, 2022. I have denied this part of your petition request as the documentation that you supplied does not confirm any long-term academic impacts during the 2022 Fall term that you were to be completing these courses in. I recognize that the documentation that you supplied dated July 31, 2024 confirms a brief absence from your studies around reading week, it also suggests that you were able to return to your studies shortly after.
3) I have decided to grant your request to drop COMM 211 (S22) as the documentation that you supplied confirms that you were receiving medical treatments throughout the Summer term. Your grade in this course will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript.
Saif, I want you to know that this was a lenient decision as the documentation suggests that your treatments began in May, prior to the drop deadline of this term. It is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
4) I have decided to deny your request to drop GPHY 330 (F22). As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulations 1.1 stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I have denied this part of your petition request as the documentation that you supplied does not confirm any long-term academic impacts during the 2022 Fall term. I recognize that the documentation that you supplied dated July 31, 2024 confirms a brief absence from your studies around reading week, it also suggests that you were able to return to your studies shortly after. I also see that you submitted documentation dated 04/08/2024 however it appears to speak to the 2023 Winter term and doesn’t suggest academic impacts in the Fall.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied, and your academic transcript.
If you are concerned with the impact that these courses have on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating them in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
