I have carefully considered your request to waive the Petition Deadline related to the FW21/22 academic year. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulations 3.7.2 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that exceptions to the petition and appeal deadlines can only be granted in cases where extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control render the student unable to submit a petition or appeal within the specified timeline. The student must be able to show that the extenuating circumstances were ongoing. The student must also be able to demonstrate that these circumstances prevented the student from acting between the time the original decision was received and the time at which the appeal was eventually initiated. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied and your academic transcript.
I was sorry to read about the multiple extenuating circumstances that you experienced during the 2021/2022 academic year and understand from your petition letter that you have been focused on your recovery since that time period. I have however, denied this request as the documentation that you supplied does not confirm the timeline or academic impacts of an extenuating circumstance that prevented you from being to petition ECON 110 within the 1-year deadline. I also see that you were able to submit two petition requests since the W22 term ended including one within the same 1-year deadline as ECON 110.
Wanting I recognize that in your petition letter you mention the reasons why you didn’t include ECON 110 within your prior petition requests however I want to remind you that the 1-year petition deadline for this course would have been April 30, 2023. As the documentation that you supplied does not confirm extenuating circumstances during the 2022 Fall or 2023 Winter terms that prevented you from petitioning this course, I cannot grant this request.
If you are concerned with the impact that this course has on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
