I have carefully considered your petition for an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in RELS 137 (W24) and to drop GNDS 125 (F23), DEVS 102 (W24) and HLTH 101 (S24) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request for an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in RELS 137 (W24) due to the timeline and academic impacts of extenuating circumstances as confirmed by the documentation you supplied. The instructor of this course will allow you to complete the outstanding components of this course, a short paper and exam 2, during the current 2024 Fall term and it is your responsibility to connect with them directly to make these arrangements.
To grant your request to drop GNDS 125 (F23) and DEVS 102 (W24) past the academic deadline due to the timeline and academic impacts of extenuating circumstances as confirmed by the documentation you supplied. Your grades in these courses will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript.
To deny your request to drop HLTH 101 (S24) after the academic deadline. The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulations 1.1 stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied and your academic transcript.
I acknowledge the ongoing extenuating circumstances that impacted you through the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter terms as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied and I recognize that you had a new health-related diagnosis in the 2024 Summer term. I have however denied this part of your request as according to the documentation that you supplied dated 4/3/2024, you were aware of the impacts of extenuating
circumstances prior to the drop deadline of the Summer term. I want to remind you that it is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes prior to the drop deadline of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
If you are concerned with the impact that this course has on your cumulative GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
