Dear Olivia King:

I have carefully considered your petition for an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in in ECON 351 (W24). After reviewing your file and the information supplied by the instructor of the course, I have decided to deny your request.

The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulations 1.1 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. These kinds of extraordinary situations should be supported by official documentation from a health care practitioner or other relevant professional.

I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, your academic consideration requests and the information that I received from the instructor of ECON 351 related to your grades in this course.

I acknowledge the extenuating circumstances that you reported in your petition letter and I was happy to see that you received Academic Consideration for the timelines of April 13 – May 13, 2024 and from May 16 to June 12, 2024.

I have denied this request as the instructor of ECON 351 has confirmed that they accommodated you appropriately for both the final exam period and the deferred exam period as per your Academic Consideration requests. The instructor has let me know that they offered you a third opportunity to write the final exam, which was scheduled for September 12, 2024. As you were provided with an opportunity to complete this course in September and your petition did not include documentation from a professional to confirm academic impacts from extenuating circumstances at that time, I cannot grant this request.

If you are concerned about the impact that this course has on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course

code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
