Dear Sonya,
Thank you for your petition regarding Credit Standing in ECON 222 (F23), MATH 126 (FW23/24) and ECON 212 (W24). I have carefully reviewed your request and the supporting documentation that you supplied, and while I’m unable to grant your petition, I want to assure you that I’ve taken your circumstances into account as part of this decision.
According to the Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 3.3.1.4 – Credit standing is reserved for a course in which a student who has completed all of the work of the class, including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the class, but due to illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected.
Unfortunately, after consulting with the instructors of these courses, it was found that you are not eligible for Credit Standing in them. The instructors of ECON 222 and ECON 212 have confirmed that you did not achieve a passing grade in these courses as your final percentage grades were 47.3% and 48% accordingly. It appears that both of these instructors had graciously increased these grades up to a D- so that you could receive credits for the courses. The instructor of MATH 126 has confirmed that you did not complete all of the work in the course as you missed the Test 1 component, making you ineligible for Credit Standing in this case.
Sonya, I understand the challenges you have faced, and I do recognize the academic impact of the extenuating circumstances that you have experienced since September of 2023 as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. I was glad to see from your transcript that you were able to achieve high grades in other courses during the 2023/2024 academic year despite these ongoing circumstances.
If you are concerned with the impact that these courses have on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating them in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
Additionally, if you wish to appeal this decision, you are welcome to submit an appeal to the Board of Studies.
