I have reviewed your petition to take more than 6.0 units at another institution on a Letter of Permission, specifically your request to take 12.0 units at York University during the 2025 Winter term. As you know, Regulation 14.1 indicates that a student on a degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science may be permitted to take up to 6.0 units of undergraduate classes elsewhere for credit toward a degree offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science via a Letter of Permission. I have carefully reviewed your request, and I want to assure you that I’ve taken your circumstances into account as part of this decision.
I will grant your request to take 6.0 units of courses at York University during the 2025 Winter term, specifically 3.0 units of GNDS at the 300-level and 3.0 units of PSYC from the Cognitive Neuroscience course list. I have granted this part of your request due to the extenuating circumstances that you described in your petition letter that are preventing you from being able to return to in-person classes at Queen’s University. I also recognize that these remaining 6.0 units of required plan courses are not currently offered through Arts and Science Online at Queen’s. Please know that students can take a maximum of 18.0 units per term, including courses taken at other institutions.

It is important to note that some institutions are not eligible for a Letter of Permission and not all courses are eligible for transfer credits. It is your responsibility to apply for a Letter of Permission through SOLUS and receive approval before applying to the host institution.
Regarding the additional 6.0 units of elective courses that you have requested to take at York University during the 2025 Winter term, I have decided to deny this part of your request. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 3.3.1.7 at queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/current-students/course-planning-and-options stress that petition requests to take more than 6.0 units at another institution must directly address how this is necessary due to extenuating circumstances or an exceptional academic opportunity. As your petition didn’t demonstrate extenuating circumstance preventing you from being able to take your remaining electives through Arts and Science Online at Queen’s University, I cannot grant this part of your request. I recognize that you will be living away from Kingston for the 2025 Winter term, and I encourage you to consider enrolling in your electives through Arts and Science online along with the 6.0 units that you plan to take through York University.
Please be advised that Bachelor of Arts Honours students are allowed a maximum of 57.0 transfer units toward their academic program including a maximum of 18.0 units toward their joint major plans.
