I have reviewed your petition to take more than 6.0 units at another institution on a Letter of Permission during the 2024/2025 academic year, specifically your request to take 12.0 units of courses during the 2025 Summer term. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
As you know, Regulation 14.1 indicates that a student on a degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science may be permitted to take up to 6.0 units of undergraduate classes elsewhere for credit toward a degree offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science via a Letter of Permission. Academic Petition and Appeal Regulation 3.3.1.7. states that students in good academic standing may request permission of the Associate Dean (Academic) to take more than 6.0 units at another institution on a Letter of Permission. The student's petition should directly address how taking courses at another institution is necessary due to unexpected extenuating circumstances or how the courses present the student with an exceptional academic opportunity not available at Queen's.
I understand that you are currently restricted to a part-time course load in SOLUS however I recognize that you have presented a realistic academic plan within your petition request that explain how you will successfully complete your final degree requirements. I want to remind you that according to Academic Regulation 14.1. students completing their final courses of an Honours degree must have a minimum Plan GPA and cumulative GPA of 1.90 in order to be eligible for a Letter of Permission.
If you achieve a minimum 1.9 cumulative GPA once your Winter term grades are released, I will allow the part-time restriction to be waived so that you can apply for a Letter of Permission for your final 12.0 units of courses during the 2025 Summer term. If however, your cumulative GPA remains below 1.9 once your Winter grades are released, I suggest that you plan to return to Queen’s for the 2025/2026 academic year to complete your final degree requirements.
It is important to note that some institutions are not eligible for a Letter of Permission and not all courses are eligible for transfer credits. It is your responsibility to apply for a Letter of Permission through SOLUS and receive approval before applying to the host institution.
Finally, please be advised that Bachelor of Arts Honour students are allowed a maximum of 57.0 transfer units toward their academic program and a maximum of 24.0 transfer units toward their plan.
