Thank you for your petition requesting to take more than 6.0 units of courses on a Letter of Permission. After a thorough review, I regret to inform you that I’m unable to grant your petition. I want to emphasize that this decision is based on the guidelines outlined in the Faculty of Arts and Science Academic Petition and Appeal Regulations.
As you know, Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.7.1.7 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petition requests to take courses at another institution must directly address how this is necessary due to extenuating circumstances or to an exceptional academic opportunity. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. These kinds of extraordinary situations should be supported by official documentation from a health care practitioner or other relevant professional.
I understand that you have already received a Letter of Permission for 6.0 units of courses during the summer term and that you wanted to take an additional course while away from Queen’s. I have denied this request as your petition did not include documentation to confirm that an extenuating circumstance is preventing you from completing your remaining requirements at Queen’s. I would also like to point out that the POLS courses you are taking on a Letter of Permission are clearly intended to complete your Political Studies Minor, but completing that Minor is not necessary to degree completion under the pre-modular rules that apply to your degree. Since the 6.0 units you are already taking on a Letter of Permission will give you the 120 units you need for the BAH, any additional courses are unnecessary.
Going forward, I suggest that you meet with an Academic Advisor to review your remaining degree requirements and to establish an academic plan for the upcoming academic year.
