Dear Mr. Paitich:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop GPHY 102, GPHY 227 (F 2014), GNDS 215, GPHY 228, GPHY 240 and HIST 241 (W 2015) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in GPHY 254 (F 2014). After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.
I would like to note that I am granting this appeal based on the documented extenuating circumstances you experienced during the last year. These issues were clearly outside of your personal control and therefore, warrant waiving the academic deadlines. However, even after these courses have been dropped and the CR notation has been applied to your transcript, your cumulative GPA still falls well short of what is necessary to avoid a requirement to withdraw. I will explain in detail below.
Your transcript shows that you were placed on Academic Probation in May 2013 because your GPA was below 1.60. According to the academic regulations, you should actually have been Required to Withdraw for One Year at that time because your GPA was below 0.70 due to some late grade changes but the Associate Dean (Studies) felt that it was too late to enforce this ruling so you were placed on Academic Probation instead.
During the following year you again failed to raise your GPA to 1.60. In fact your GPA fell to 0.55 and so a Required to Withdraw for One Year standing should have been imposed in May 2014. However, the Associate Dean (Studies) decided to allow you to continue on Academic Probation because your grade in CLST 101 was still outstanding, and without that grade you had not attempted 18.0 units since being placed on Academic Probation.
Your academic record was assessed again this past May and the Required to Withdraw for One Year was applied because your GPA was still less than 1.60. In fact, it had fallen further to 0.49. Even with these courses dropped and the CR notation applied as a result of this appeal, your cumulative GPA will be 0.65. Because there are enough course attempts on your record since being placed on Academic Probation to issue a formal ruling; and you have avoided two previous applications of a requirement to withdraw, the current Required to Withdraw for One Year standing still applies.
After reviewing your file, your current appeal and the letter from Dr. Thompson, it appears that your personal challenges are still ongoing and there is no evidence that they will be managed or resolved so they don€™t continue to interfere with your studies. For this reason, I feel that it is in your best academic interests to spend the next year away from your studies and take the time you need to work on finding ways to better manage these issues so they do not continue to negatively affect your academic success. Keep in mind that you will be eligible to return to studies as early as Summer term 2016.
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
