Dear Nadia Persaud,

Your petition requesting an exam deferral in CHEM 281 (F25) has been granted.

The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulation 1.7.1.6. states that a student affected by extenuating circumstances who cannot write their exam as scheduled may submit a request for academic consideration and ask the course instructor for an exam deferral. The instructor may agree to a deferral for up to one full term after the completion of a class. If the student is unable to write the deferred exam due to the same or different extenuating circumstances, any further request for an additional exam deferral must be made through a petition to the Associate Dean (Academic). In such petitions, the instructor will be consulted for their agreement to a further deferral and confirmation of the new exam timeframe must also be included. If the instructor cannot support an extension of an exam deferral, the student may be encouraged to consider other petition options instead. 

I acknowledge the health-related challenges you described in your petition letter, as well as the bereavement that you have been experiencing. I am sincerely sorry that these circumstances prevented you from completing all of your Fall term courses.

As you know, the instructor of CHEM 281 (F25) is not able to offer further deferrals in this course beyond those already provided. I want you to know that I also explored other academic options, including Aegrotat Standing. Under Academic Petition and Appeal regulation 1.7.1.3, Aegrotat standing is available only when a student is unable to complete all course work due to illness or other extenuating circumstances, and when the instructor confirms that the student has met the essential learning outcomes based on the work that they were able to complete. As the instructor of CHEM 281 has indicated that the final exam is the primary indicator of these outcomes, this academic option is not available in this instance.

However, as the documentation that you supplied confirms academic impacts of extenuating circumstances during the 2025 Fall term, and you are eligible for a deferred exam under the regulation, the Exams Office can facilitate offering you a deferred exam in this course. Alternately, I will allow you to drop CHEM 281 (F25) after the academic deadline instead of writing the deferred exam.

Please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 10 business days of receiving this letter to indicate which academic option you would prefer.

Going forward, I see that you are currently enrolled in more than the recommended number of units for the Winter term. Please know that 18.0 units in a term is a very heavy course load. As the documentation that you supplied indicates ongoing academic impacts, I would strongly encourage you to meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss your academic plan for this term.

I would also suggest that you consider registering with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) if you have not done so already, so that you obtain ongoing support from an Accessibility Advisor who can help manage the ongoing impacts of your health on your academics.
