Dear Annie,
I have carefully considered your petition to drop ECON 110 (FW24/25), POLS 112 and ENGL 114 (F25) after the academic deadline and for Credit Standing in GNDS 125, PHAR 100 (W25) and SOCY 100 (F25). While I’m unable to grant all of these requests, I want to assure you that your circumstances were reviewed thoughtfully and with care as part of the decision-making process.
After reviewing your petition letter and the documentation provided, I am able to grant your request to drop ECON 110 (FW24/25), POLS 112 and ENGL 114 (F25) after the academic deadline. Your final grade in these courses will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript once this has been processed by the Office of the University Registrar.
With respect to your request for Credit Standing in GNDS 125, PHAR 100 (W25) and SOCY 100 (W25), Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 1.7.1.4 states that Credit Standing is reserved for a course in which a student who has completed all of the work of the class, including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the class, but due to illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected.
I acknowledge the multiple extenuating circumstances outlined in your petition letter and extend my condolences on the passing of your grandparent. I also recognize the efforts you made to access professional support beginning in the Fall 2024 term and continuing through 2025. I appreciate the documentation you provided and am glad to hear that you are receiving appropriate support, including accommodations through Queen’s Student Accessibility Services.
While I do empathize with your situation, the grading records for GNDS 125, PHAR 100, and SOCY 100 (W25) indicate that not all graded components were completed. Specifically, the instructor of GNDS 125 reported that the 25% final paper was not completed. The instructor of PHAR 100 reported that Assessment 2 and Assessment 3, together worth 24% of the final grade, were not completed. The instructor of SOCY 100 reported that the majority of graded components in the course were not completed. As not all graded components of these courses were completed, you are not eligible for Credit Standing under the regulation.
If you are concerned with the impact that your final grade in a course has on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
Additionally, if you wish to appeal this decision, you are welcome to submit an appeal to the Board of Studies.
