Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
This letter is written to humbly request to waive the one term deadline to submit a late appeal for credit standing (CR) in some courses and dropping some courses, after the established deadlines. I have medical documentation enclosed (dated February 3, 2023) corroborating my extenuating circumstances that prevented me from appealing within the deadlines and prevented me from acting at that time, until present day. My medical documentation states If this request has past any deadlines, it is due to her ongoing medical condition. The factors that prevented me from appealing from the time the course finished or the academic ruling was made until present day are the following.
I was not aware I had this medical condition that had been severely impacting me and my academic performance until I seeked clinical and psychiatric diagnosis, in which both professionals confirmed the severity of my ongoing medical condition that had been affecting my academics (without my knowledge) for the past 4 years. Since I was unaware of my medical condition, I humbly ask you, how was I supposed to appeal for something I did not know I had? You can kindly empathize with why I did not apply for this appeal until I was made aware of my medical situation.
At the time the academic rulings were made, I not only was NOT aware of my medical condition, but also suffered from depressive episodes as a symptom of my medical condition. These depressive episodes led me to not being able to reach out for help. I was only able to get diagnosed when my parents noticed my behaviour, and took it upon themselves to drag me to the doctor to understand what I was suffering through. After my doctor diagnosed me, I worked with them for a while, until they referred me to a psychiatrist for further help. I have since then been working with both of them with treatment plans. I can obtain a letter confirming my symptoms from now on are being managed to the point that they should not have a significant detrimental effect on my future academic performance upon request if deemed necessary by yours truly.
Since my academics were affected due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control, I would like to file for Credit Standings (CR) in some courses, as well as drop some courses which were affected by my medical condition in the last four years. Again, these requests were not made during the deadline as I have an ongoing medical condition that prevented me from appealing within the deadlines (as stated in the medical documentation provided), as well as my lack of awareness that I was suffering through a medical condition out of my control until the professional medical diagnosis.
Therefore, I am humbly filing an appeal requesting to waive the one term deadline so a late appeal may be heard for me to request Credit (CR) standing in courses (Academic Regulation 10), and to drop courses after the last official date for dropping classes. My medical documentation attached demonstrates and confirms that there were extenuating circumstances beyond my control that rendered me, the student, unable to appeal within the specified timeline.
