Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am writing a petition to drop my Music 105 course. I want to major in math and minor in physics so this was supposed to be my elective. I had taken Music 104 during the first semester which was a prerequisite for this course and I ended up getting an A in that course. Music 104 was not too much extra work, so it allowed me to focus on my other courses. Music 105 seems to be a lot more work than what I had thought based on Music 104. This not only means that my Music 105 mark is inadequate but this also means I am spending less time on my other courses that I do need going forward and lowering those marks. For example, to study for my last written Music 105 test I did not go to my physics lecture or my Math 110 tutorial as I felt I needed more time to study. I am now struggling in the Music 105 course and it looks like I may not even pass. I would like to drop this course so that instead of focusing my time on a course I will not pass, I can focus my time on understanding content in the courses I do need that also provide a base for other courses I will take in the future.
Music 104 also had no ear training tests however, Music 105 does. I did not know this when I signed up for the course, and when I found out I hoped my written tests would be high enough that it would not matter about the ear training tests as I have a diagnosed hearing problem. My hearing impairment has to do with pitches coming into my ears so during ear training tests it is hard to hear the difference between a minor 2 and major 2, major 2 and minor 3, and so on as they are only one semitone apart. I had previously expressed that I could not hear the difference between two keys that sat next to each other on a piano to my Music 104 professor however, I was told that it would not make a difference in that class and because of this I did not realize it would make a difference in Music 105. I was waiting for my second written test to be handed back to decide what to do as I had studied so hard to catch up over the reading week. I did get it back and have failed both the written tests that I have taken. This course has caused a lot of stress, any of my friends will tell you this as they see me right before Music 105 lectures in Math 120 tutorials. My plan for the future is to take LAW 201 (Introduction to Canadian Law) online in the summer to make up for these credits. I feel this will make for a better plan than continuing in Music 105 as I took law in high school which means I have a background in it and I enjoyed the class.
