Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to formally request a late withdrawal from ECON 354, Computational Methods in Economics in Finance, due to extenuating circumstances. I enrolled in the course despite lacking prior coding experience, as it was not listed as a prerequisite - although it was recommended. Until the deadline to drop the course, I was performing quite well, and did not see a need to drop the course as I felt confident in my ability to learn the necessary skills to succeed. However, as the semester progressed, the course load has increased significantly, and I have had to dedicate an increasing amount of time to studying the materials - which has taken a toll on my performance in other courses. I have since reached out to an academic advisor about alternatives to dropping the course, such as retaking the course again, however, I was informed that the course will not be offered again next year, and possibly never again due to limited enrolment.
In addition to these issues, I have been facing severe financial hardship this semester, which have prevented me from devoting the necessary time to succeed in my coursework. After paying my tuition this semester, I no longer had any funds in my student line of credit. In order to make ends meet, I have had to work multiple extra shifts a week, leaving me with little free time to study and complete assignments.
These financial hardships in conjunction with the additional stress of falling behind in other classes has been causing me severe anxiety, which I have been addressing with the help of a therapist. Since beginning my sessions with my therapist, I have been working on an outline of things I can do to alleviate some of the stress in my life, which became my motivation to withdrawal from the course.
Given these circumstances, I believe it is in my best interest to withdrawal from ECON 354 to alleviate some of the stress and anxiety I have been experiencing and to allow me to focus on my other courses. I would be grateful for your understanding and assistance in facilitating a late withdrawal from the course.
