Petition Letter
I am writing to request academic consideration for the challenges and extenuating circumstances that have adversely affected my academic performance throughout my time at Queen's. I understand the importance of maintaining a strong academic record, and I assure you that I have worked diligently to overcome these circumstances. However, the impact of these events has been significant, and I believe it is important to bring them to your attention.
In my first year, the sudden death of my uncle had a profound impact on my emotional well-being and ability to focus on my studies. Later, in my second year, I experienced another devastating loss when my cousin passed away. Both of these events required me to attend funerals and support my grieving family, which took a considerable toll on my mental health and academic performance.
Throughout my time at the university, I have contracted COVID-19 on three separate occasions while on campus, which led to serious health complications. These incidents forced me to miss classes and struggle to keep up with my coursework while recovering.
Additionally, I have a chronic migraine condition, which has been particularly challenging to manage since losing my insurance coverage for my medication. This has further hindered my ability to concentrate and excel academically.
I have also faced obstacles in obtaining accommodations for my ADHD. The process was not only time-consuming and stressful, but also cost me 500, which I was never reimbursed for, as well as paying for additional testing in order to instate academic considerations for me. The aforementioned financial burdens added to the stress I was already experiencing.
During this time, I was juggling work, school, and personal responsibilities, leading to sleep deprivation and an increase in stress levels. This exacerbated my pre-existing OCD, causing it to spiral out of control and further impact my academic performance.
To cope with these challenges, I have sought help from healthcare professionals and personal counsellors. I have also worked to prioritize self-care and manage my time more effectively to better balance my academic and personal life.
In light of these extenuating circumstances, I kindly request that you take these factors into account when evaluating my academic performance. I am committed to continuing my education and striving for success, and I believe that with the appropriate support and understanding, I can overcome these challenges and reach my full potential.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I appreciate your understanding and consideration.
