Petition Letter
I am petitioning to have Psych100 (fall 2022/winter 2023) dropped past the academic deadline. This might be a little heavy so I would like to apologise. Within the last semester (since the start of 2023) I have seen a huge decline in my mental health, at some points being close to sucidal. As I am in my second year, this is my first year fully living alone and paying my way through university. While in first semester I was working so hard I would often dismiss my mental health as surviving physically was more important. Although effective for a short term it, when I entered my second term it became all too much.
At the beginning of the school year I reached out to student services as I??ve always struggled with depression. Unfortunately my appointment was booked 3 and a half months later, and throughout that time I completely ignored my mental health. By the time my appointment came, we had a week till the end of semester one. I have a very unhealthy relationship with my family who I spent the holidays with, it further declined mental health. Going into second semester there were day where I was unable to get out of bed most days and quite honestly ready to give up. I proceeded to have regular appointments with student services where I received counselling and worked with doctors to find medications that worked for me which was very hard. Throughout the semester I was very mentally ill that it took a severe toll on my physical health as well. I was very malnourished and when I would fall sick it would be very bed and last an extended amount of time. Recently I have been working extremely hard to build up my physical and mental strength. I have been adjusting with new medications recently but have finally started to see an increase in my mental health.
Since I have been a child I have always used art as a form of therapy which is why I am very fortunate to attend the fine arts program here. Psych is the only course I would like to drop as it is a course I have just fallen behind in and have been unable to catch up. As fine arts is such a small program including myself and 20 other students I was able to work with my profs to create plans that have been successful to catch up in those areas. I also took psych for Con-Ed but have recently dropped it as it was something I was just no longer interested in and I was unable to do the upkeep for that class due to the same reason. Psych has nothing that would be beneficial for my future at Queens university. I have worked so hard to get to the place I am at right now, I want to do the best for my school as I possibly can and unfortunately my mental health has sabotaged that in a way. Within the next year I plan to work with myself to be better at managing my health in all ways by being in contact with student services and receiving counselling which has been very helpful this year. I also have an understanding now that my health should be a priority as well as school. Throughout the summer I have set up appointments to find a permanent therapist while I am at home for the summer. I??m sorry if this was difficult to read in anyway and I hope you have a great summer
