Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am completing this petition as a request to drop MATH 121. At the start of this year, I ran into a health issue that heavily impacted my academic work and progress. It was tough to keep up with the material, complete assignments and attend lectures as I live off campus. Everything was piling up due to my health situation, and as a first-year student, I didn't know how to navigate thoroughly and stay positive. As a result, I registered for QSAS in November and got my fall term exams deferred to January.
Unfortunately, I didn't do well in MATH 121A, as I had to prioritize my other courses since I had little time. Overall, this has put me under much pressure this semester, and I have found it too challenging to complete my math work, as It was causing a lot of stress and impacting my health. As much as I tried and had the hope to pass at least, I have found now that it's a possibility I can fail the course, and I fear the outcome of that on my transcript. I completely understand that it was my responsibility to evaluate more efficiently and think ahead, but I was oblivious to how much Ramadan could impact my health and schedule.
In addition, the meds my cardiologist transcribed are supposed to lower blood pressure and heart rate. Having them right now while fasting has taken away my energy and productivity, as I feel very lightheaded and can hardly focus throughout the day. I have added MATH 121 as a summer course this year, as under these conditions, I believe it's the best way for me to complete it and not fall behind.
For documentation, I will attach what I have provided for QSAS. Unfortunately, I don't have a doctor's note explaining my condition through Ramadan at the moment. Still, I had an appointment with my doctor on April 6th, and he explained that my condition should take time to disappear, and he transcribed other anxiety meds since stress and anxiety have both been driving factors. Dropping MATH 121 will ease much pressure, and I would genuinely appreciate it.
