Petition Letter
ello,
Thank you for taking the time to review my petition to drop my courses after the due date. There are several factors/reasons I have for doing this. The first and most important reason to me is wanting to withdraw from Queen's. although my time here has been great I feel as though I am not ready to commit to four years of an undergraduate without first understanding what I want my career path to be. I am Learning to become a soccer coach at the time of this letter and I am planning to pursue that aspect of my life before continuing with my education. I am planning to do volunteer work for a charity with children in sports this summer to help boost my coaching career and I do not want my grades and overall GPA to be affected due to this past year. I also feel as though this first year has not been an accurate representation of my academic capabilities. Going into University I was a bright student with a healthy lifestyle. I actively attended school regularly and was hardly ever late, even after my mother had moved over an hour away from my school I continued to drive back and forth to make it to school on time. I participated in my school's sports teams and was an active member of society. This past year at Queens I have felt extremely unmotivated and a shift in my personality here due to a few reasons. The first was my father's passing. He developed kidney cancer which eventually spread throughout his entire body and sadly he passed away. Dealing with this issue on my own after moving away from my mother in Bradford has been a very big hurdle I've had to overcome. It has affected my academic motivation and I have found myself struggling with basic tasks on the days I am down. In Grade 12, dealing with this issue was a bit easier as it had not fully settled in yet and I was able to use extracurricular soccer as a coping mechanism. This brings me to another huge demotivating factor that affected my school life, soccer. Going into last summer, I was under the impression that I would be receiving an offer from the men's soccer varsity team. However, after a lot of miscommunication, this resulted in me accepting my academic offer thinking I would be receiving a letter of intent for the soccer team as well. Unfortunately, this never happened. Soccer was and still is the biggest part of my life when it comes to having fun and truly being myself. I felt as though I had that stripped away from me this year and it seriously affected my entire life. Because of these issues and other smaller reasons, my academics have taken a serious toll. This is why I am looking to drop my courses. I have realized that before I can commit to something like an undergraduate degree I need to be able to find purpose in doing so. I feel like I forced myself to come to Queen's due to the offer from soccer. When I didn't receive that offer every other issue in my life seemed much greater. I am looking to either transfer to another school next year or take a gap from my studies to pursue coaching further. I hope you can understand how much being able to clear my courses would mean. I wasn't able to drop my courses in the time frame usually given due to my not knowing what I wanted when it came to my career.
Thank you for considering my appeal,
Ayush Das
