To the Associate Dean (Academic)
I am appealing to have my course evaluation reconsidered for CISC 365 (Algorithms I) that I took in the Fall 2022 semester. This was my second time taking this course as I need a C- as a prerequisite for a 400 level course and didn't achieve this minimum grade my first time around. I was well on my way to achieve much higher than a C- during my second attempt, but due to some extenuating circumstances on my end and bad communication with the professor / academic team, I ended up failing the course.
This started with me missing Test 2 due to illness. I informed the professor that I was ready to write a make-up test the following week. It took 3 emails and 10 days to get a response back from him. At this point, I believe it was too late for me to write a make-up test so he shifted the weight to Test 1 and 3. This wouldn't have been a problem, except I ended up missing Test 3 due a to a health emergency related to my grandmother.
I informed the professor that I am leaving the country the following week so redistributing weight of Test 3 to the other assessments would be ideal, but I was ready to write a make-up test. Again, it took the professor a week to get back to me when I had already left the country. He did mention there??s another deferral test in January, but I was starting my QUIP that week so it wouldn??t be possible to commute to and back from Kingston for the test.
I was referred to Erin Gunsinger and explained my circumstances to her as well. First she said that she will confer with the Undergrad team to determine our options, but in the end she just said she will leave it up to the professor to determine how to move forward with this. After all this back and forth, there was no viable solution presented and I missed the prerequisite C- again despite doing well in all the other assessments.
This situation has been very frustrating and stressful to deal with alongside my QUIP. Going forward, I would really appreciate if the C- prerequisite was be waived for CISC 497 (Social, Ethical and Legal Issues in Computing). I looked into the course and it doesn??t really make sense in the first place to require a C- in Algorithms for a course on social, ethical and legal issues. Taking this course a third time will mean extending my 5 year degree even further, which is far from ideal.
I am not entirely sure what supporting documentation to provide for this appeal. Kindly let me know what options I have moving forward.
