Petition Letter
Due to my previous academic performance, I was placed on academic probation and required to withdraw from Queens for the 2022-2023 academic year. I am requesting to drop the courses: ARTH 215, HIST 323, HIST 241, HIST 215, CLST 214, CLST 309 during the 2021-2022 academic year and am also requesting that my required to withdraw from Queens be expunged from my record. I have made these requests under advisement from both my Psychologist and an academic advisor due to a previously unknown disability. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, after having tried to deal with it throughout my adult life. I have been suffering mental health issues that have impacted my ability to be productive in the university setting. After undergoing a psychological assessment with a psychiatrist, I was diagnosed with ADHD.
ADHD has permeated and negatively affected every aspect of my life, especially my academic career and personal life. It is admittedly very mentally taxing for me to focus and complete even basic tasks such as brushing my teeth or preparing myself for school/work. More complicated processes such as completing coursework in a timely and efficient manner has proven to be extremely difficult, often leaving work to be submitted very late or incomplete. In working with a therapist this past year and recently getting a clear understanding of this diagnosis, many of the issues that were derailing my productivity and mental well-being, can be attributed in part to ADHD.
My mental health has suffered dramatically during this time, as the distress caused from my worsening academic performance caused a major depressive episode, unfortunately compounding my already poor performance. I have been working with a therapist to try to remedy some of the issues that stall my progress and she has come up with strategies to ensure success.
To date, my time at Queens is not reflective of who I am as a student. In light of my recent diagnosis and efforts I am making a sincere effort to empower myself. I won??t excuse my poor performance at Queens during the 2021-2022 academic year, however my ADHD diagnosis is an explanation into why I struggled as much as I have.
I am requesting consideration regarding my academic standing and ask the university to drop ARTH 215, HIST 323, HIST 241, HIST 215, CLST 214, CLST 309 from my academic transcript in order to remove myself from academic probation and complete the courses to finish my Queen??s degree. I am quite excited to return to Queens in this coming academic year. Thank you for understanding and considering my request.
