Petition Letter
I was struggling with this course in the first part of the semester due to mental health issues (starting from Feb 22 ?? Mar 6, documentation for academic consideration is attached), which lead to a few problems and prevented me from dropping this course before the drop date. For starters, I was not in the best mental space, nor did I have enough information (e.g. grades given back) to make this decision. Now that I have had time and more information available to me, I am making this request, and it is not being done lightly.
At first, I got academic considerations for this course, in order to waive assignments I could not complete while I was in mental distress. Then I was in discussions with my professor to try to come up with strategies so I could work through the course without dropping. We spoke together multiple times in the second half on the semester, however in our last meeting (May 9), we concluded that the best pathway for me would be to get a late drop for CISC 203 and retake the course in September. While I did make improvements in the second half of the course, my desire to succeed was not able to overcome the setbacks I had from my struggle in the first 6/7 weeks of the winter semester. Professor Meger actively encouraged me to request this late drop, as she believes it will greatly benefit me and I will be able to have a successful outcome once I retake the course.
The majority of the grades in this course come from 4 assignments (worth 60% in total). I was struggling at the beginning and unable to hand in the first one, and the due date for the second assignment was not until March 6, three days after the drop day (Mar 3). As I had academic considerations, I was eventually exempted for this assignment. Therefore, I did not have a good representation of my progress in this course. Afterwards, there were only a few assignments left that I could submit, and I did put my focus on the two final major assignments, which I submitted on Mar 24 and April 27th. However, there were a lot of students in the course, so grades came back slowly. I got the grades for these assignments on April 18th and May 1st respectively. This meant that the first significant portion of my grade I received for this course was not until April. While I tried best with the course assessments, however, there just was not enough time to boost my grade to the necessary level.
I sincerely ask you to take these extenuating factors into consideration and approve my request for this late drop. I am confident that I will perform much more strongly if I am given the opportunity to work without the results of one bad semester dragging me down.
