Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to you today as I am petitioning for an extension of an incomplete grade for KNPE 254 (Winter, 2023). Since enrollment at Queen's University, I have had registered accommodations through QSAS. The condition with which I struggle is neurological and varies in severity, the greatest of which can leave me debilitated. I needed to use my accommodation to defer the second midterm for KNPE 254. As opposed to writing it at a later date, the percentage of the examination had been added to the weight of my final exam. Unfortunately, during the final, I experienced a medical episode, which had been the first time I had experienced one in the midst of a final. With this condition, symptoms set in before I could ascertain what was happening. These symptoms largely revolve around limited cognition such as processing and recalling information. When I had determined I could not complete my examination, I had been in a disordered state and the proctors had taken an incident report.
I had reached out to my professor to inform her of my circumstances. The professor had been willing to reallocate the grade distribution but had still weighed the final rather heavily as she had believed that I had sufficient time to complete the exam as it had been the same as my peers. My mental state had largely inhibited my performance on the examination and that can be seen through the grade of which I had received. I do not believe that this grade is sufficient for the expectation of this institution nor representative of my comprehension of the material. I am petitioning on the grounds of an incomplete grade as I do not believe this final should be counted towards my final grade nor do I believe in the absence of the final and the second midterm that I have enough for completion of the course. As I do not want my established efforts to be discounted in this course (i.e. the labs) I am requesting an opportunity to write the second midterm and final and would be willing to do so when the class is taught next as then the professor would not need to make a new examination for one student. To mitigate my medical condition I intend to take a reduced course load going forward. I am also taking summer courses to compensate for the fewer credits during the fall/winter season. I hope that a more balanced academic workload will reduce the impediments of my condition on my coursework and will allow me to allocate a greater amount of time to the fewer courses at hand.
