Petition Letter
This petition letter is related to my requirement to withdraw from the Life Science and Biochemistry program at Queen's University for 1 year. I am writing to have my requirement to withdraw waived. I understand that I did not do well my first year at Queen's University, though there were circumstances that affected me in a negative way that impacted my academic performance. I was having mental health problems during the school year dealing with depression and self-doubt due to an unfortunate situation with my significant other. This was someone I met at Queen's and decided to start seeing more often. I spent a lot of time with this person during the school year and ultimately after 5 months of seeing each other, I discovered that my significant other was unfaithful. This was the beginning of a downward spiral for me, which I have now corrected. Although at the time I was struggling mentally and began to shut myself in my room because of self-doubt and anxiety that I was feeling. I did not have many people to talk to, I kept the feelings to myself and had only been able to talk to 1 of my friends for guidance and reassurance. This was something that I found was very difficult for me to talk about to others and had therefore not talked to any family members or other trusting people in my life. Because of the circumstance I was in, I began to focus less on myself and do things that were able to numb my sadness and instead help me forget about the situation I was in. I decided to go out more and attend parties and do things that brought action or presence into my life. I started to talk with my friends and others that have gone through the same experience and I have begun to work on myself more and forget about the things that happened and focus on my goals and what I want to achieve. I have made an academic plan and have made adjustments to help myself perform better in school my next academic year.
