Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am petitioning to drop courses MUTH 111,FILM 110,CLST 306, COGS100. Due to unforseen personal events within my personal life, start from the late begging of the school year, my mental state has been declining as well as my physical state. My parents were planning to get a divorce, I got covid and flu, there was a point in life I could not move or process anything. Being an international student living alone far away from home in a total strange social setting overwhelms me more than I can imagine. I try to do good in school but I just couldn’t drag my body to class regularly. For fall term, I did well in quizzes and tests in COGS 100, some of the grades were A/B but I couldn’t attend the final exam because of my anxiety. Which the exam is worth 30% of the grade. And I lost a lot courage after that, I stopped doing anything and I barly function when winter term comes. I did try to reach out for help form student wellness but I had to cancel the appoitment from the psychaitrist because it was during winter break and I was away from campus. With MUTH, I barely submitted anything because my fear of failing, which did lead me to such result. So did CLST 306 and FILM 110. I was expericing extreme brain fog and at the point, I disassociate almost all the time. I couldn’t take myself accountable to do well acedemiclly because I was struggling to survive. The reason why I didn’t drop the courses eariler is because I still have unrealistic hope for myself that somehow I can make up for all this but in reality I couldn’t. Nor did the professors think so because how much I’ve fall behind.
I’ve getting professional treatment in China since I’ve gotten back and I have been better than before. I am taking medications and regular therapy. I am much motivated and I believe I can re do the courses in the up coming school year. I will take lighter course load to adjust to my circumstances but I want to take responsibilities for my faults by doing the courses again and doing them better.
Hope you can consider this,
Sincerely,
Leah Lyu
