Petition Letter
To Whom it may Concern,
RE: Brendan Rourke, Student # 20273148
I have been under the care of Dr. Julie Maggi since last fall (2022). We have been working on my levels of anxiety and depression focusing on increasing my focus and motivation. At the start of the winter term, I was much more engaged in my class work, and studies. I also was working part-time for the Queen's intramural team as the hockey convenor. Although I was not functioning at my usual level, I was feeling much more confident and ready to take on my course work.
In February 2023, I sustained a concussion playing recreational hockey. This was my third concussion, and it occurred right before mid term break, and exams. I tried to return to my studies as soon as I could, and this proved to exacerbate my symptoms. I really could not focus, or concentrate for any length of time. I did attend treatment at the Queen's Concussion Clinic. Following this my doctor recommended that I speak with my professors to obtain an incomplete grade and plan to complete them in the fall term. She really felt that trying to push through would not be beneficial for my recovery. I have reached out and been in contact with Melissa O'Meara, intake coordinator at QSAS in order to discuss the incomplete grades with my professors.
I also did start speaking with a psychologist- therapist during this past semester but the connection was not beneficial toward my symptoms and recovery. I have now been referred to another psychologist and am starting therapy again with her. I am hopeful this will also be helpful in my return to academic programs in the fall.
Sincerely,
Brendan Rourke
