Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to petition for the dropping of three courses, MUSC 171, FRST 105, and ARTF 101, which I am currently enrolled in for the Summer Term of 2023. I understand that the deadline to drop courses has passed, but I request your consideration due to unforeseen extenuating circumstances that have significantly impacted my ability to perform academically.
In the past few months, I have faced a series of unfortunate events that have had a profound effect on my mental and emotional well-being. Firstly, I have been dealing with an illness that has caused me to be significantly physically unwell and ultimately unable to fully engage in my studies. This has left me physically exhausted and mentally drained. The constant battle with my health has made it extremely challenging to keep up with the demands of my coursework. Moreover, I have also experienced the heartbreaking loss of two loved ones within a short span of time. These tragic events have me in a state of deep grief, making it immensely difficult to focus on my academic responsibilities. The emotional toll of these losses has been overwhelming, leading to prolonged periods of sadness, anxiety, and an overall decline in my mental well-being. As a result of these extenuating circumstances, I have struggled to provide my best quality of work, complete assignments on time, and fully comprehend the course material. Despite my best efforts to cope with these challenges, I have found it increasingly difficult to balance my personal circumstances with my academic responsibilities. Consequently, my performance in these courses has suffered significantly, jeopardizing my chances of successful completion.
Regarding the question of why I am petitioning to drop these specific courses, I would like to clarify that these courses were the most affected by my circumstances. These three courses were the only courses I have been enrolled in the Summer Term, the workload and structure of MUSC 171, FRST 105, and ARTF 101 made it particularly challenging for me to keep up. The nature of these courses required a high level of engagement, attendance at practical sessions, and the timely submission of assignments, which became increasingly difficult for me to manage given my health and personal circumstances. Within the designated drop deadline. At the time when these extenuating circumstances arose, I was hopeful that I would be able to overcome the challenges and regain a sense of stability in my life. Unfortunately, the gravity of the situation and the persistent nature of my illness and emotional distress became more apparent as time passed. By the time I realized the need to drop these courses, the deadline had already elapsed, leaving me with limited options.
Regarding the completion of the courses, I regretfully admit that due to the continued impact of my circumstances, I am unable to fulfill the requirements of these courses within the given timeframe. My circumstances have made it difficult for me to devote the necessary time and energy to succeed in these courses. However, I am committed to taking the necessary steps to address my extenuating circumstances and regain my academic momentum. I am actively seeking appropriate medical care and counseling to manage my health and emotional well-being effectively. Furthermore, I am developing a comprehensive plan to ensure that I can make a successful return to my studies once my circumstances are more stable. This plan includes adjusting my course load, seeking additional support services, and adopting effective time management strategies.
I understand that my circumstances may raise questions about my ability to complete my degree at Queen's University. While I am currently petitioning to drop these courses, I am optimistic about my long-term prospects. I firmly believe that I will be better equipped to resume my academic journey and fulfill my remaining requirements after withdrawing from these courses and focusing on my overall well-being. I plan to continue with my courses and degree requirements in the 2023-2024 year and further academic years at Queen's University. To provide supporting documentation for my extenuating circumstances, I have attached letters from my healthcare providers. These documents offer an objective perspective on the challenges I have faced and the necessary steps taken to address them. I hope they serve as evidence of the sincerity and legitimacy of my petition.
In conclusion, I kindly request that you consider my petition to drop MUSC 171, FRST 105, and ARTF 101 for the Summer Term of 2023, given the extenuating circumstances I have described. I assure you that I am fully committed to my academic success and am taking the necessary measures to overcome the obstacles that have impacted my progress. I am grateful for your time and consideration, I really appreciate your help and understanding.
Sincerely,
Sukhmani Sandhu
