Subject: Petition for Credit Standing (CR) - DEVS 220 - Introduction to Indigenous Studies
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am writing to submit this petition letter requesting credit standing (CR) for the course DEVS 220 - Introduction to Indigenous Studies, which I undertook during the summer semester of 2023. Despite having fulfilled the learning outcomes of the course, I received a D- due to extenuating circumstances that significantly affected my performance. I would like to explain the situation surrounding these circumstances.
I successfully completed the course requirements; however, I encountered a significant setback due to an unforeseen and severe health issue. On May 30, I was diagnosed with pericarditis, an acute heart condition, while receiving medical care at the Sault Area Hospital Emergency room. This condition resulted in intense chest pain and extreme fatigue over a two-week period, greatly impeding my physical and mental capacities, including my ability to effectively engage with the course material. The impact on my overall well-being was profound.
Although the acute phase of the pericarditis was subsequently managed through a two-week medical intervention, I continue to experience residual effects. I struggle with persistent fatigue, exhaustion, and periodic chest pain, albeit at a milder to moderate level. I am under ongoing medical supervision and required to adhere to a medication regimen.
Throughout this challenging period, I endeavored to keep up with the course's demands. However, due to my health constraints, I was unable to meet several deadlines for timed activities such as discussions and live sessions. Consequently, I could not attain marks for these components due to my inability to participate. Additionally, assignments involving peer review and discussion were adversely impacted, leading to reduced scores. I am grateful for the instructor's understanding and the support provided by the Queen's Student Accessibility Services (QSAS), which enabled me to submit assignments belatedly without incurring penalties.
It's important to note that my enrollment in this course was singularly for the summer semester, and the onset of my heart condition occurred after the drop deadline. This renders me unable to retake the course in a subsequent semester. In light of these circumstances, I am earnestly seeking a credit standing (CR) for this course to ensure that my academic progress is not hindered by factors beyond my control.
I am attaching a Verification of Extenuating Circumstances Form, completed by Medical Doctor Ben Morgan of Sault Area Hospital, dated August 4, 2023. Dr. Morgan is familiar with the academic appeal process and my medical condition, making his statement a credible documentation of the duration and severity of my health-related issues.
