Petition Letter
To whomever it may concern,
My name is Summer Shainhouse, and I am a third-year student at Queen's University pursuing a
Bachelor of Science Honours degree with a major in Biology. I am writing to express my strong
interest in participating in the IFSA Study Abroad Program in London, England, during the
winter semester of 2024.
My motivation for seeking this opportunity stems from a dual desire: to enrich my academic
knowledge and to immerse myself in the vibrant culture of London. London offers a unique
setting where I can expand academically and personally while engaging with a diverse faculty
and peers. Studying in London will enhance my academic journey and allow me
to experience a different educational approach. This experience will equip me with valuable
skills and perspectives to strengthen my academic performance when I return to Queen's
University.
Beyond the academic aspect, my decision to pursue this exchange program is deeply influenced
by my mother's immigration story, which inspired a lifelong appreciation for travel and
exploration. Some of my most cherished childhood memories revolve around her captivating
travel tales, and I aim to create unforgettable experiences during this exchange.
The IFSA Study Abroad Program in London offers many intriguing courses that allow me to
expand my learning beyond the classes I have taken at Queens. Their immersive approach sets
these courses apart, featuring class trips and excursions that enrich the course content and
provide hands-on experiences.
My goal for the future is to attend dental school, and many dental schools across Canada require
students to take electives in their undergrad; these courses will allow me to meet those
requirements, diversify my degree and broaden my knowledge in ways that are not accessible in
Canada.
I have taken the necessary steps to prepare for this journey, considering all logistical aspects,
including course selection, living costs and accommodations, and visa requirements. I have been
in active contact with Eleni Katsarelas, the program advisor at IFSA, to aid me along this journey
and application process. I have already selected the courses I wish to take abroad and submitted
all the required documentation.
I am beyond eager to go to London through the IFSA program and am sincerely grateful for your
consideration of my application to participate in the winter semester of 2024.
Thank you for your time.
Best regards,
Summer Shainhouse
