Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my strong interest in studying abroad during the Winter 2024 semester at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. As a third-year Life Sciences student, I am looking to enrich my academic journey and expand my personal horizons through immersing myself in a new culture. I believe that studying and living abroad in Barcelona will provide me with a new educational perspective and allow me to explore innovative learning methodologies. This opportunity aligns perfectly with my academic pursuits, my passion for cultural exploration, and my commitment to personal growth. This experience will not only foster personal growth but also allow me to share the knowledge I have gained with the Queen's community upon my return.
Studying at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will provide me with a unique educational opportunity that I cannot receive in Canada. I will have the ability to experience new teaching methods and classroom environments. I am hoping to enroll in courses such as Urban Intervention, Graffiti and Public Sculpture, Intercultural Communications, Spanish Contemporary Art, Entrepreneurship, New Venture Communication, and Mediterranean Politics. Although I am currently a Life Sciences major, I have always been curious about finding novel ways to learn and round out my education. These courses are unique to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and will push me beyond my comfort zone. For instance, Graffiti and Public Sculpture, and Urban Intervention would not only allow me to draw on my creative instincts but would also enable me to experience creativity firsthand. Given Barcelona's architectural history and its reputation for contemporary art, this is an opportunity I cannot pass up. The field trips offered will allow me to immerse myself in the curriculum, which is something I cannot do at Queen's University. Further, Spanish Contemporary Art and Mediterranean Politics are courses and fields of study that are beyond my reach at Queen's. The idea of exploring these subjects in the geographical context that governs the core course concepts is an excellent opportunity.
One of my favourite hobbies is travelling. I enjoy exploring historic sites and immersing myself in new cultures while travelling with my family and friends. While studying abroad in Barcelona, I hope to take part in many educational and new experiences that will help me learn about the local culture and meet new people. Additionally, I hope to travel to other countries within Europe to expand my personal horizons through immersing myself in many different new cultural experiences. Studying at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will also allow me to foster a new hobby, as I have always wanted to learn a new language. I believe that this experience will enhance my language skills by learning from an array of multicultural perspectives—an experience that Queen's University cannot provide.
Furthermore, I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine. The unique combination of courses offered at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will assist in setting me apart in my application for medical school. Studying abroad introduces cultural competence and language proficiency, both of which are valuable traits in healthcare. It will also provide me with a global perspective on healthcare systems. Experiencing life in a foreign country will contribute to my personal growth and help me build a diverse network of contacts. In all, this experience can help me align with the criteria that Canadian medical schools seek in their applicants.
I pride myself on being a very responsible and organized student. I am confident in my ability to complete all of my school work to the best of my abilities and handle all logistical aspects of studying abroad (i.e. accommodations, finances, visas, flights) in a timely manner. I believe that the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will unlock my full potential. I am hopeful that I will be granted permission to take five elective courses at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in the winter of 2024. I am looking forward to the opportunity to embark on this journey and I am grateful for your consideration of my application.
