Petition Letter
October 17th, 2023
To Whom it may Concern:
I am writing this letter in order to request a late course drop for the courses I was enrolled in during the Summer 2023 academic term and two courses I was enrolled in during the fall/winter 2022-2023 academic term. The summer semester courses were ENGL 100 - Introduction to Literary Studies (ASO) NS23, and ENGL 215 - Canadian Literature (ASO) NS23. The fall/winter term courses were ENGL 100- Introduction to Literary Studies (ASO) NS23, and RELS 131 - World Religions/Religious Worlds (ASO). I am requesting to petition for these late course drops due to the mental illnesses I suffer from and the negative effect they have had on my academic performance.
Historically, I have been a very high achiever, prioritized my academics, and loved learning and the school environment. Until recently, I never struggled in school or had difficulty fulfilling the requirements of my courses. Anxiety is something I have always struggled with, but I have previously been able to channel it through my school work and academics. However, starting in September 2022, I began to experience an extreme lack of motivation, concentration, and the ability to prioritize my academics and well being. I was starting to seriously struggle with my mental health, and this continued throughout the 2022-2023 school year as well as the summer 2023 academic term. During this time I was experiencing suicidal ideas, disordered eating, and struggling with self harm while attempting to complete my course work. My mental health gravely affected my ability to succeed in my courses.
I am now attending counseling every week and am being treated and medicated for MDD (Major Depressive Disorder). Already I have seen a major improvement in myself, both academically and mentally. I am on track with all of my current courses, and am once again enjoying learning. I have attached letters from both my Therapist Kate Mooney and Nurse Practitioner Pamela D. Bart, who both have an understanding of my mental health and how it has affected both myself and my academics.
I appreciate your time and consideration in this very important matter. If you require any further information please let me know.
Best Regards,
Cassidy McEvoy
