Petition Letter
Good evening,
I am petitioning to be dropped from ASTR 101 for the Fall semester of 2023. I was hoping I would be able to complete the workload for the required classes for my major; POLS, while taking part in electives. Unfortunately, my effort to maintain a thorough understanding of my course material and complete my assignments to the best of my ability suffered. I have been struggling with my mental health since the beginning of the semester, but I had coping strategies that assisted me in remaining on track for my course. As the semester continued I found myself unable to keep up with work, my courses, my social life, and my mental health.
I did not receive the grade for my ASTR 101 midterm until after the deadline to drop the course, and prior to receiving it, I had believed I would be able to keep up with the workload for all 5 courses. But, after seeing the work I put into studying for this exam at the expense of delaying several important assignments in other classes and neglecting my personal wellbeing, I struggled to cope when I failed. I fell into a deep depressive episode early November, in which I did not leave my room for days at a time. I stopped eating and was sleeping in short bursts at erratic hours, I fell behind in my coursework and class attendance, and missed one of my ASTR midterms. Along with the results of the first midterm, I concluded that my ability to catch up in this course was undermined by my continuing struggle with my mental health. I believe it would be beneficial for my personal life and my academic future to be able to remove this course from my Fall semester. I acknowledge that if this petition is accepted, it is an exception and will not become a regular occurrence. I am in the process of a complete psychiatric evaluation with the goal of finding sustainable treatment and practices for my mental health.
Thank you for your consideration,
Grace Boyce
