Petition Letter
Dec 6, 2023
Respected Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I have been going through depression, anxiety, and social withdrawal. This is something I have been struggling with since highschool, but it relapsed again in the mid of September after moving into residence and living alone for the first time. I had a really hard time connecting with people and it led me to stay in my room for extended periods of time because of loneliness. Because of this, I often felt lethargic and stayed in bed all day and did not eat, go out, or take care of myself. I was not able to focus on my school work and keep up with deadlines because of this, and as I missed more and more work, the stress continually added to my depression. More specifically, it started after I missed my second Chinese test for CHIN100. I felt really bad and it put me into a bad mental state which made it an uphill battle to keep up. It started with just CHIN100 but quickly spread to all my other courses. This is why my academics went into a sharp decline, although I was doing well in the beginning.
I am still currently struggling with my mental health and it has affected even my physical health.
Currently, I am seeing a psychiatrist and he suggested that I took a break from everything. If I stay in school in the condition I am in, I feel certain that my performance will continue declining and not show my true potential. However, I am planning to come back to school and resume my studies after I recover and start afresh if I am able to.
I know it is very late in the semester to drop courses but could you please allow me to drop all my Fall courses and Winter courses as I focus on recovery? I have tried to push through and did not want to drop earlier, but when it started to affect my physical health, I could not stand it anymore which is why I am petitioning for a late drop. Please kindly grant me the time to heal, regain, and refresh my mental health and body to come back to school when I am ready.
Thank you for your understanding and support!
Kind Regards,
Joshua Ko
