Petition Letter
Good afternoon,
My name is Shannon Little (SN: 20328865) and I am requesting to drop my two classes BCHM 218 and BIOL 243.
Due to severe health challenges that have significantly impacted my ability to perform academically. I have been diagnosed with SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, this is where there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestines), which has resulted in me needing a therapist for depression and anxiety.
My SIBO has greatly affected my digestive system as I experience aggressive symptoms of bloating and brain fog. My symptoms of brain fog lead to my depression and unfortunately, I was only able to afford a therapist during the summer and could not get one during the Fall Term as my student job could not cover that. And so it worsened which lead to the decline of my grades.
This has greatly affected my grades for these two classes, and as I am currently on academic probation, I wish to drop these two classes as for the past week I have been experiencing large amounts of anxiety and suicidal thoughts that have been affecting my ability to properly study, and I do not wish to go to an exam without feeling fully prepared for it.
I could not drop out of these courses at week 8 because I believed that I would be able to increase my grades for them with the remaining weeks left. Unfortunately, I had a depressive episode where I had to go home and do my best to teach myself the content and complete some assignments (where I did not receive the best grade and affected my marks). One of the main reasons why I wanted high grades as well as to switch my program to Life Science Honours (and I would need a high GPA to be considered for that)
Should my petition be granted, I will take a lighter course load and get myself linked with the Student Academic Success Services to learn different study habits and remain in the Geography general program (as the course work is lighter).
I shall also be tested again for SIBO (as I currently have an appointment with my gastroenterologist on December 19th) and reconnect with my therapist and have weekly meetings with her to address my mental health.
