Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean ,
I am seeking your understanding and support due to unforeseen and uncontrollable psychological challenges that significantly impacted my academic performance during the specified period. The primary contributing factor was a series of emotional and mental dysregulations, as outlined in the attached supporting document..
The onset of these difficulties can be traced back to the late fall of 2022, when the cumulative weight of my longstanding mental health issues reached a critical point. While I have grappled with mental health challenges throughout my academic journey, the previous year marked a juncture where the intensity of these issues became almost unmanageable. The manifestation of emotional and mental dysregulation during this period significantly exacerbated the inherent struggles I faced, leading to the failure of CHEM 281 and a D+ in GPHY 209.
Throughout my academic career, I had developed coping mechanisms to navigate the challenges associated with mental health. However, the escalation of my condition during late fall 2022 and early winter 2023 surpassed the effectiveness of my usual coping strategies. The emotional and mental strain I experienced transcended the manageable threshold, adversely affecting my cognitive functions, including concentration, comprehension, and memory retention.
Consequently, my approach to coursework underwent a necessary adaptation. Given my limited mental capacity to engage with challenging subjects, I instinctively diverted a substantial portion of my attention towards courses that were comparatively easier for me to comprehend and manage. This strategic shift was not an intentional neglect of my academic responsibilities but rather a pragmatic response to the heightened difficulties I faced during this period.
The specific impact on my coursework, especially during the exam period for CHEM 281 and GPHY 209, was profound. Unfortunately, the culmination of my psychological challenges coincided with the critical exam period, leading to a big impediment to my ability to prepare adequately for final exams. The impaired cognitive functioning, characterized by diminished focus and heightened emotional distress, made it exceptionally challenging to delve into the intricacies of complex concepts, especially in CHEM 281 where a meticulous understanding is crucial to the success of the course.
The nature of chemistry courses, such as CHEM 281, demands a heightened level of cognitive engagement and conceptual understanding. Unfortunately, my compromised mental state during the exam period hindered my capacity to meet these demands. The result was a noticeable deviation from my established academic record, reflecting the impact of the extenuating circumstances on my performance. Much like the struggles I faced in CHEM 281, the difficulties in effectively studying for the GPHY 209 exam were rooted in the compromised cognitive functioning resulting from my mental health challenges. The need for heightened concentration and focused study, particularly for a course introducing concepts that were new to me, collided with the cognitive limitations imposed by my emotional and mental dysregulation during that period.
It is important to emphasize that this deviation from my typical academic performance is not indicative of my inherent capabilities or commitment to my studies. Rather, it is a direct consequence of the unforeseen and uncontrollable challenges posed by my mental health struggles during a critical academic period.
For this reason, I would like to request a DR on my transcript for CHEM 281, and a CR for GPHY 209, as I still completed the course despite my issues. I sincerely hope that, through your understanding and consideration, a fair evaluation can be achieved, taking into account the extenuating circumstances and the proactive steps I am taking to address them.
Following the challenging period in late fall 2022 and early winter 2023, I took proactive measures to prioritize and enhance my mental health. Despite the inherent difficulty I face in expressing my emotions, I initiated conversations with trusted individuals, articulating my feelings and seeking support, thereby establishing a crucial network for my recovery. Recognizing the interconnectedness of physical and mental well-being, I incorporated daily exercise into my routine to alleviate stress and promote a healthier balance. Seeking professional guidance, I incorporated nutritional supplements to support cognitive function and emotional well-being. Actively monitoring my mental and emotional state, I implemented a self-awareness practice, reflecting regularly to detect early signs of distress. Through this multifaceted approach, encompassing emotional expression, physical activity, nutritional support, and self-monitoring, I am committed to fostering a resilient mental state and preventing a recurrence of the psychological challenges experienced during the specified period. This is showcased in my academic performance following the semester of Fall 2022, not only have my grades significantly improved, my passion for education has also increased significantly.
I am committed to my academic success and would like to hopefully pursue further education. It would dishearten me if my past circumstances prevent me from doing so. Thank you again for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Meriam Dahmani
