Academic Plan
Academic Advisory Plan for my BAH Major in Politics and Minor in Economics;
The Focus of My Studies
I am registered in my desired degree plan and now understand my remaining degree requirements. I acknowledge my negligence towards making sure I have been following my degree plan and realize I should have contacted academic advisory, or done the degree check ahead of time such as at the start of the semester.
Expectations or Intentions with Respect My Course Load
I am currently enrolled in four courses this semester and am on track to finishing them, hopefully with success. Previously, I did have to work while attending school which meant I should have taken on a lighter course load to ensure my success. This semester I am not working and therefore have full prioritization towards my studies. My area of concern, based on Queen’s Preparing an Academic Plan, would be under Academic Skills & Work Habits and Financial Resources. Under Academic Skills & Work Habits, I find it hard to keep up with my academic responsibilities within my academic progress, graduation requirements, and seeking academic advice. In terms of Financial Resources, I previously felt my hours at work impede my ability to manage my course load, but this semester I am not working therefore it does not affect me. But, due to financial stress over the past three years, I fell behind in my program and in my grades and it has led me to graduate later than expected.
Strategies for Success
In understanding that it is my lack of skills in organization, time management, and stress related coping mechanisms, there are a few strategies I will do in the future in order to improve and not have repeat incidents. First, if I am feeling overwhelmed, I will contact academic advisory and seek advice on lowering my course load. I will also consult with counselors at Student Wellness Services and look into strategies to deal with stress. Secondly, I will improve my organization skills by reflecting on my previous strategies of time management and evaluating areas of concern. This will then help me create an improved time management strategy while also identifying which aspects of my life are draining most of my time. Lastly, in terms of organization, I will find online resources such as the Study skills and habits questionnaires to identify academic skill sets that can improve my performance. I also should look into participating in on campus workshops in order to improve my study habits and responsibilities. Hopefully, implementing these strategies for success will improve my academic skill set, my abilities as a student, and avoid repeating this issue.
