Petition Letter
Dear Dean Stephenson,
I am petitioning to waive the deadline to request credit standing. I experienced extenuating circumstances beyond my control during the Fall 2022 term that caused me to earn a substantially lower grade in CHEM 281 and ANAT 315 than expected. It has been over one year since the end of the Fall 2022 term; however, I hope you will consider waiving this deadline so that I may petition for credit standing in these two courses.
Nearing the end of the Fall 2022 term, I experienced an unexpected mental health crisis, which made it necessary for me to leave Kingston and defer all of my exams. I was still struggling with my mental health during the deferred exam period, and unfortunately, I was unable to prepare properly for my exams. When I received my final grades, I was devastated. My GPA dropped significantly, and I was worried about the impact this would have on my future education. I learned that students could petition for credit standing under such circumstances, but I did not have the mental capacity to focus on anything other than my Winter 2023 courses. I had planned to submit my petition over the summer when I felt better, but even then, I could not bring myself to start the process. Truthfully, I felt like I did not deserve to ask for help. I felt like I was at fault and needed to accept the consequences of my mental health episode. For this reason, I decided not to petition for credit standing. It was not until December 2023 that I began to accept that I needed to ask for help. I decided to use my winter break to write my petition letter, but I unexpectedly lost a loved one during that time. Writing a petition letter became the least of my priorities, and the deadline passed. After missing the deadline, I felt even more undeserving of a second chance, but I know I will regret not trying. Therefore, I am writing to ask for a second chance to petition for credit standing.
In the future, I will make sure to explore my academic options in a timely manner and adhere to all deadlines. I have been working with a therapist since I first began experiencing issues with my mental health in 2022, and they have helped me immensely. Not only did they help me work through my initial mental health episode, but they are currently helping me feel more comfortable advocating for my needs. Should this petition be successful, I plan to immediately set aside time to submit a subsequent petition to request credit standing. If any feelings of doubt or uncertainty come up that threaten to delay my progress, I will address them with my therapist. As such, I am confident in my ability to complete the petition process and seek help earlier in the future.
Thank you very much for taking the time to review my petition to waive the deadline to request credit standing. I look forward to hearing your decision.
Sincerely,
Madison Gill
